Water Allocation

TVNZ's Q&A Whena Owen reporting on Tranche 2 Water - February 13th 2022

Dave Hern has been a fishing guide in CHB since 1986. Watch Dave talk about this stretch of the Waipawa River which died up completely in October 2018 – he predicted it would stay that way until April. Dave pins responsibility for this environmental disaster squarely on the HB Regional Council for over-allocating water from the Ruataniwha Plains aquifer. (2.22)

This flyover starkly highlights the death of ancient Kahikatea in Inglis Bush Scenic Reserve, located along the upper reaches of the Tukituki River. The tragic death of these giants of the forest is due to the falling water table, which commenced some 20 years ago with the introduction of large-scale irrigation for intensive farming on the Ruataniwha Plains. What price progress?
